Staples Confirms Florida Acquisition

Staples has confirmed its second major acquisition of an independent dealer in the Florida market.

Following on from the acquisition of leading Florida dealer Capital Office Products last November, the office supplies giant has now snapped up Florida-based Gulf Coast Office Products (GCOP) as it moves ahead with its 20/20 strategic plan.

Headquartered in a 38,000 sq ft (3,800 sq m) offices, showroom and warehouse facility in Pensacola, GCOP is the largest independent office supply distributor in the Florida panhandle and also has locations in the states of Alabama and Mississippi.

Founded in 1993 by Mark and John Wright, the dealer specializes in selling office supplies, furniture, printing products and janitorial equipment. It is a major player in the government and public sector and recently won a place on the new Florida state contract for office supplies.

“GCOP has a stellar reputation thanks to a reliable delivery team and outstanding sales and customer service,” Neil Ringel, President of North American Delivery at Staples. “This acquisition is another demonstration of Staples’ commitment to our 20/20 strategy. Adding GCOP will bolster our mid-market sales force and improve our capabilities in this region.”

It is perhaps not a coincidence that the first two dealer acquisitions following the announcement of the Staples 20/20 plan have both come in the state of Florida, the home turf of Office Depot, and it will be interesting to see which region(s) Staples targets next. Further acquisitions are certainly in the pipeline.
